The Maldives’ capital Malé is gearing up for a mass anti-government rally on May day. The protestors say they are determined to “end the government’s tyranny” and free imprisoned ex-president Mohamed Nasheed and former defence minister Mohamed Nazim.
The day kicked off with prayers at dawn. Another round of prayers will take place at noon. Protesters have been told to wear comfortable shoes and clothes for the official demonstration, which will start from the Artificial Beach at 3:30pm (3 pm IST).
